Struggling to decide between a soft mattress and firm mattress?
May is better sleep month – This is a good time to go back to the soft vs firm dilemma. Better Sleep council said that 51% of Americans prefer a firm/very firm mattress while 49% prefer soft/very soft mattress. This means that an average couple has a 50-50 change of agreeing on a mattress preference.
When people talk about firm and soft, they are really talking about the top layer’s feel of the bed, not the actual support level. Regardless of the decision you make, you must make sure that the mattress that you are taking/purchasing allows your spine to maintain its natural curve and aligns with our hips, neck, and head without painful pressure points.
Where do you think you fit in?
- Firm Mattress Lover – Sleep experts have concluded that people who usually prefer firm mattresses are people who sleep on their back or stomach. They prefer a flat/even surface because of the support it provides the spinal cord.
- Soft mattress lovers – These are the people who usually sleep on their side because they would like to sink into the extra cushioning because a firm mattress creates uncomfortable pressure points on their hips
Firmness is rated on a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being soft and 10 being firm). There is a range of comfort levels that depend on the materials that are used and how they are assembled/incorporated.
Finding a mattress that will help one sleep is easier than most people think it is.
Most companies sell mattresses that are firm on one side and soft on the other, making sure that
Another option that is available is an option of getting a split king, with each side equal to a twin-XL size mattress, so that a couple can choose which type of bed they would like. If you decide to purchase this way, then you must consider buying a mattress connector (a piece of fabric or sometimes foam that covers the split between the beds and often includes straps to hold the two side by side mattresses).
Side note: Two single mattresses create the with of a king but are about 12 centimeters shorter
If you want another low budget solution you can consider a firmer mattress than your partner prefers and then add a twin topper to one side for the person who loves the soft bed.
